20,000 Avandia Lawsuits Settled
Recent news has surfaced in the controversial case surrounding the diabetes medication Avandia. GlaxoSmithKline, the company who marketed the medication, is paying $3 billion to resolve the whole thing. The settlement would resolve more than 20,000 cases of Avandia-related side effects such as heart attacks. It looks like Glaxo wants a clean slate, and this settlement is part of their effort to do so. Glaxo even previously agreed to pay $700 million to settle 15,000 claims last year.
The remaining cases had a 75-day deadline for them to be resolved, but it is unclear if that goal has been met. No Avandia cases have yet come before a jury. In 2010 Glaxo agreed to stop promoting the drug worldwide after regulators banned it from Europe's market and severely decreased its sale in the United States. Avandia used to make a $3 billion profit in one year alone, but after the claims started pouring in, it decreased by 43%. The $3 billion settlement is going toward stopping government probing of their marketing practices.
