More Troubles Surround Cancer Drug Avastin
Off-label usage of Avastin for treatment of macular degeneration has blinded at least 19 patients in the U.S., with others suffering impaired vision or other adverse side effects. Now the drug poses another potential safety challenge to users - a counterfeit version of Avastin has made its way into U.S. markets.
Genentech's parent company, Swiss drug manufacturer Roche, first learned about the counterfeit product after being contacted by a health authority outside the United States. The official tipped Roche off to the fact that the counterfeit product had made its way into the U.S. from another country. The whistleblower would not, however, reveal which country was the source of the drug.
A joint statement by Roche and Genentech said they were working with the FDA and law enforcement officials to determine the source of the fake drug and stop its further distribution. The FDA has sent letters to 19 medical practices informing them of the potential presence of counterfeit Avastin in their stock. It is not yet known how much counterfeit Avastin is currently on the market.
