About Accutane (Isotretinoin)

Accutane (isotretinoin) is a prescription drug that was first introduced in the early 1980s to treat severe acne, when other forms of treatment were unsuccessful. It is a form of vitamin A and works by reducing the amount of oil secreted by the glands in the skin. It also helps the skin renew itself more quickly. Accutane was initially used as a chemotherapy agent to treat patients with cancer, but researchers began to notice the medication's positive impact on reducing whiteheads, pimples and blackheads.

Although Accutane initially received accolades as a "miracle drug" for severe acne treatment, it quickly became evident that the drug was creating serious side effects in some patients, including birth defects, inflammatory bowel disease and even suicide. Accutane manufacturer Roche Pharmaceuticals pulled the drug from the U.S. market in 2009. During the more than 25 years that Accutane was on the market, it is estimated that more than 13 million patients received the medication.

At this time, isotretinoin (of which Accutane is a brand name) is only available in the United States under a special program called iPLEDGE. Patients, doctors and pharmacists must register on the iPLEDGE website in order to be eligible to receive the medication. The purpose of the iPLEDGE program is to prevent female patients from becoming pregnant while taking isotretinoin.
