PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors)
Pharmaceutical Injury Lawyers
Have you suffered any type of serious side effect caused by a PPI such as Prilosec (omeprazole) or Prevacid (lansoprazole)? If so, a
pharmaceutical injury lawyer can provide insight regarding your legal options. You may be able to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the
drug to seek financial compensation for medical care and possibly much more.
PPIs, or proton pump inhibitors, are drugs that work to reduce acid production in the body by blocking the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that creates acid. In reducing acid production, PPIs are intended to prevent ulcers and to allow any existing ulcers to heal. PPIs may be used to treat or prevent ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Some of the leading types of PPIs include Prilosec, Nexium, Aciphex, Prevacid, Zegarid and Protonix.
Side Effects Caused by Prilosec, Nexium and Other PPIs
PPIs have been associated with serious side effects, ranging from headache and diarrhea to an increased risk of
bone fracture and
pregnancy problems. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has recognized and required a warning for prescription proton pump inhibitors related to an increased risk of hip, wrist and spine fracture. The risk of fracture was particularly evident in long-term PPI use or prescription PPIs as opposed to over-the-counter versions of these drugs. In addition to noting the possibility of bone fracture, the FDA also released an announcement that proton pump inhibitors may cause low serum magnesium levels if taken for a prolonged period of time. Muscle spasm, seizure and irregular heartbeat may be associated with low serum magnesium levels.
