DePuy ASR Hip Implant Recall

Pharmaceutical Litigation Lawyer

The ASR hip system from DePuy Orthopedics first became available in July of 2003. It is estimated that approximately 93,000 patients received these hip implants. Since DePuy's voluntary recall of ASR hip implants, many patients have come forward to review their legal options with attorneys who handle lawsuits related to defective medical devices.

In August of 2010, DePuy Orthopedics issued a voluntary recall of two hip implant products: the ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System. This recall was issued after data from a study conducted by an independent joint replacement registry in the U.K. indicated that some patients who received ASR hip implants required a revision surgery to replace the ASR implant with a new implant. The data indicated that approximately 12% of patients required revision surgery within five years of having an ASR resurfacing device implanted, and that 13% of patients required revision surgery within five years of having an ASR total hip replacement. These percentages are approximately twice the normal failure rates for hip implants.

The three primary issues with the ASR hip implants are loosening, where the implant does not remain securely in place, fracturing, where the bone around the implant is broken, and dislocation, where the two parts of the implant that move against one another become dislocated or misaligned. Due to these problems, patients may experience pain, swelling and difficulty walking. They may require additional surgery to replace the defective implant.
