Side Effects: DePuy Hip Implants
Defective Hip Implant Attorney
If you or someone you love underwent hip replacement surgery and a DePuy ASR hip implant was used, it is possible that you have experienced or are experiencing serious side effects. The DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Resurfacing System have been associated with a failure rate that is approximately twice that of other hip implants. These two products were voluntarily
recalled by DePuy Orthopedics in August of 2010.

Adverse Reactions from DePuy ASR Hip Implants
There are certain key symptoms to look for in a defective hip implant. Although some amount of pain, swelling and difficulty walking are natural after hip replacement surgery, if these symptoms persist or come back, it may indicate a problem with the implant. There are three primary problems with ASR hip implants that may cause these symptoms:
- Loosening – if the implant does not remain securely in place, it may become partially or entirely detached from the bone.
- Fracture – the bone around the implant may fracture.
- Dislocation – the two parts of the hip implant that move against one another may become misaligned or dislocated.
Patients who experience these side effects may require a revision surgery, at which time the defective hip implant will need to be replaced with a new implant.
DePuy ASR hip implants have also been associated with a condition called metallosis. The metal-on-metal implant may cause friction and therefore the release of potentially hazardous levels of cobalt irons and chromium into the body. This can lead to rashes and nerve damage.
